Freeview boxes reach 60 million

There are nearly 60 million Freeview set-top boxes, TV and PVRs, according to new research.

The latest Ofcom Digital TV Progress report found that Freeview HD is now in a quarter of a million UK households.

Around 100 Freeview models are available to customers in the UK and the service is the most popular digital service, beating Sky, Virgin and BT Vision.

With the country set to go completely digital in 2012, Freeview accounted for around 10.1 million (39.3%) homes in the second quarter of 2010.

According to Ofcom UK digital television take-up reached 92.7% in the second quarter, with only a fifth of sets still receiving analogue.
