Recently, Toshiba has renewed its range of portable Canvio hard drives with the Canvio Premium, Advance and Basic models with capacities up to 4TB with HDDs featuring Toshiba’s 1TB platter technology. In this review we look at the Canvio Advance 2TB.

The Canvio Premium and Advance ranges have drive capacities of 1, 2 and 4TB capacity, while the Basic models are available in 1, 2 and 4TB capacity. Using Toshiba’s 1TB platter technology, the drives are slimmer than previous models, for example, the 2TB Advance we’re reviewing has a 14mm profile, about 5.5mm thinner than the previous versions.

These mobile hard drives are in any case very portable and fit, for example, in the breast pocket of a men’s shirt, not counting the 45 cm long USB 3.0 cable, which is also used for the power supply. The light and compact size is partly due to the latest generation 2.5-inch mobile hard drive from Toshiba that is used internally.

There may be faster external HDDs on the market, but the Advance is smaller and lighter than a lot of others. And since external HDDs are primarily made to go somewhere, those are notable features. In addition, the Advance is faster than the Premium. In short, the Toshiba Canvio Advance 2TB is a good performer with a large capacity in a pocket size. Put it in your laptop or camera bag and you will have a lot of fun with it.
