ITV_Player_logoRumours are flying about that ITV is working on turning its catch-up service, ITV Player, into an app for iPhone, BlackBerry and Google Android owners.

According to an article over at The Telegraph, a source close to the broadcaster is quoted thus: “ITV is trying to get its content onto every platform and having ITV Player, its 30-day catch up service, available on the key smartphone devices, is an incredibly important part of the broadcaster’s digital strategy.”

The app is expected to arrive around September. It won’t be free. Says the source: “There will be a one-off payment for the app, and the app will be populated on a daily basis with new content which will be continually supported by advertising.”

ITV said it was “considering options” to see that its consumers could get content “on a range of platforms to suit their lifestyles.” It’s also believed to be working out a deal with Sony to get the ITV Player on the PlayStation 3, which already offers BBC’s iPlayer.
