Samsung snaps first 8MP camera phone

Samsung has released the first 8-megapixel camera-phone into the UK market. The Samsung i8510 will be available in the UK in partnership with The Carphone Warehouse from early September 2008.

Samsung says the i8510 takes mobile handset photography and multimedia experience “to new heights”.

As well as “top of the range” camera technologies, there’s a surround-sound cinematic video experience, the “best mobile internet browsing experience” and mobile gaming capabilities.

The Samsung i8510 offers the latest in imaging applications such as smile shot (waits till there’s a smile before snapping a pic), anti-blink (waits for open eyes), multi-shot and face recognition.

Users can enjoy personalising and editing their photos, videos and music with Movie Maker and Story Board applications.

The handset also acts as a digital photo frame, allowing users to display their favourite images… floating along on a wave.

"To be the first company to launch an 8MP multimedia device in the UK is a proud moment for everyone involved and demonstrates beyond any doubt that Samsung is very much on the ascendancy,” said Mark Mitchinson, vice president of Samsung Mobile UK and Ireland.

George Dymond, UK trading director at the Carphone Warehouse said, it was amazing that it had taken only a few years for camera-phone technology to improve from just 1-megapixel to a “now staggering” 8-megapixel.

“The Samsung i8510 really draws a line in the sand as a mobile phone with absolutely brilliant camera technology,” Dymond said.

The Samsung i8510 includes:
* 2.8-inch 16-million colour LCD screen
* Internal 8GB memory
* External memory slot capable of adding 16GB
* 1200mAh battery
* Supporting for DivX, WMV, Real Player and MPEG4
* External dual speakers and 3D surround sound supported by DNSe 2.0.
* Two games, Asphalt 4 3D and FIFA 08.
* HSDPA high speed internet
* Wi-Fi connection
* A-GPS technology, for navigation and geo-tagging.

The Samsung i8510 has launched globally as the Samsung Innov8. However, in the UK, the phone will only be known as the Samsung i8510.
